Recently, my car’s service center contacted me to set up an appointment due to a malfunction. It was communicated to them from the diagnostic software in my car key! After plugging it into computer diagnostics, I was told what needed to be fixed for a longer life for my car. I didn’t have to just trust the mechanic’s judgment — but knew that the computer was comparing my car’s information with thousands of others to come to an accurate conclusion. Wouldn’t it be helpful to both clinicians and DSOs if we could bring that scope of data to dental practices?
Turns out, we can. And Diagnocat AI does just that. Their AI-powered software for 2D and 3D image analysis brings information gained by analysis of scans of 10 million teeth. Fifty-five global dental professionals trained its deep learning model that analyzes and detects conditions. Like my mechanic’s diagnostics, this technology can steer clinicians in the right direction, while building trust with patients and growing their practices.
Diagnocat is continuously improving its AI model, and it can analyze a large quantity of radiographic data more accurately and faster than a human. The top five conditions detected are:
Besides these common conditions, it is also useful for detecting those that a practitioner might have never seen before or determining between two conditions that can look similar on radiographs.
AI’s insights are like having a leading KOL walk through your practice’s door whenever radiographs are taken to help you figure out and visually communicate the best course of action. Even better, this colleague would have a photographic memory of every patient ever seen and add to this their secure knowledge base with every new patient! The amazing peer would also offer to create a report for you full of suggestions based on that perfect vision, and then it’s up to you to define a treatment plan as you see fit. Obviously, most dentists would welcome that kind of support, and through the genius of Diagnocat’s founder, Dr. Alex Sanders, many dentists and DSOs around the world already do!

After investigating possible dental issues, Diagnocat generates reports for communication with patients, the dental team, and insurance companies. When a diagnosis is backed up by objective AI-generated notes, the report can be included in insurance claims and predeterminations are approved more frequently. When patients can avoid or reduce the financial strain of dental work through insurance, they can afford to accept more opportunities for treatment, which means more revenue for practices within the DSO.
On the clinical side, Diagnocat can help to reduce misdiagnoses. AI doesn’t have the biological limitations of human vision. The human eye is capable of distinguishing about 12 different shades of gray. But with its intelligence and computer vision, Diagnocat AI can distinguish 256 different shades of gray! It can identify up to 25 different pathologies within 2D and over 65 conditions and pathologies within 3D images.
Detecting dental issues early speaks to preventive dentistry as well. So, if periodontal disease is jeopardizing bone health and needs treatment, the clinician can see it quite clearly through exact measurements that translate into treatment.
The patient can look at those facts, too. Showing patients the impartial reports in parallel to detailed scans of each tooth helps them to believe and accept the diagnosis. More skeptical patients will be impressed that the AI-generated clinical information has no ulterior motive — just an ultra-objective analysis of their oral health and needs.
Typically, with more complicated scans or unusual anatomy, practitioners send those images to a radiologist. Diagnocat scans for those abnormalities as well. The dentist always has the option of still sending the image to a radiologist, but now has an advanced technology to support them. For specialists like implantologists and orthodontists who want to use this platform to help ensure the accuracy of their own treatment planning, the STL models available through Diagnocat can be used in combination with the office’s treatment planning software.
How It Works
For the DSO community, clinical workflow fits simply into one office or an entire DSO’s portfolio. First, an account is created with the office email address. Then, Diagnocat technicians connect remotely for about 20 minutes for integration. Next is onboarding. Experienced Diagnocat specialists (who are often dentists themselves) connect for a 40-minute session to show the dentists and staff how to use the system. An icon on the office desktop functions as a bridge between the Diagnocat account and office software. Basically, everything is done both automatically and remotely. Click the button to open the report. Click a button to edit, add, or remove items inside the report. And click to produce the final report. The HIPAA/PIPEDA-compliant servers are accessible anytime and from any device.

Sharing reports and data on the platform is seamless. Inside the practice, all the dentists have access to the Diagnocat information, so if a dentist leaves or is on vacation, there is no question or confusion about treatment continuity. If a dentist within a DSO needs to make a referral to another office, those offices can coordinate and communicate through Diagnocat without having to use Dropbox, or WeTransfer.
Analytical reports give DSOs additional management intel. AI’s ability to plow through large amounts of complex data to find patterns is extremely helpful. For example, analytical reports are capable of analyzing a clinic’s data on a monthly basis and highlighting possible missed treatment opportunities, such as implants.
Management in small or large organizations would be happy to know that Diagnocat AI has been shown to increase patient acceptance rates by 25% and reduce diagnostic errors by 30%. We can all benefit from better communication, improved diagnostics, and streamlined clinic workflows. In our modern age, with AI improving diagnostics from cars to consults, Diagnocat is a driving force for clinical and workflow efficiency throughout the DSO environment.
